A little about fears and phobias

Life has its fears and phobias and the best way to do anything about it is to acknowledge and work with them until you have an understanding about why you may have them. Having them is a normal part of life. Everyone has some kind of anxiety and if they say they don’t they are full of it. Fear is one of the most basic human emotions and for many folks it is related to a deep lack of self confidence. It is an emotion crucial to our sense of survival.

It is defined as emotional reaction related to a person, place, activity, event or object. It is generally a very uncomfortable feeling. Most adults know that this will pass, for a child though, fears can be very real and should be handled carefully. Making fun about their anxiety will only make it worse for them. Just try to remember how you felt when you were small. Most children will grow out of their fears. You can help them learn ways to deal with them.

We do not like to be afraid. Fear is elicited as a response or reaction to some previous life experience or trauma. It can happen when we venture out of our comfort zone to places we haven’t been before. The unknown can cause this. Sometimes fear is triggered by something that is startling or unexpected like a loud noise, even if it's not actually dangerous. That's because the fear reaction is activated instantly,a few seconds faster than the thinking part of the brain can process or evaluate what's happening. Fear is an emotion experienced in anticipation of a specific pain or danger. It can cause us to slow down, act with caution and in some cases,to freeze up entirely.

Phobias are nothing to be joking about. They are often rooted in childhood misunderstanding. They can make it hard for you to go to places you would like to go to,hard to be effective at work and put a strain on relationships. Phobias aren't just extreme fears they are irrational fears, and are quite real and quite stressful for those who experience them.

Phobias are among the most treatable mental health problems and are irrational in that the fear caused by them is not associated with a real danger. They are irrational, constant fears of specific situations, activities or objects that are avoided and cause intense anxiety. Someone with an elevator phobia might avoid tall buildings if it involves going in an elevator. Someone who grew up in the city probably has a more intense fear of being mugged than someone who has spent most of his life on a farm. People living in Florida may have a stronger fear of hurricanes than people living in Kansas, people in Kansas probably have a deeper fear of tornadoes than do people in New York. There are many fears and phobias out there and many of them I won't mention because seeing the word sometimes might cause a reaction to those that are sensitive.

Simple phobias are best treated with behavioral therapy. Treatment or therapy will enable a person to work and have an active social life. Fears and phobias are best dealt with when they are talked about. Do not keep them to yourself. Let someone know how you feel. The road to happiness is achievable. We just have to work for it. :)
